Hello my dearest friends of Literture!!!! Today it is a pleasure to me present to all of you my new creation!!!!! this blog which is in tittled: “The Merrie Monarch”. The decision was not easy, there were a lot of interesting choices, but taking into consideration the importance of this man in the history of a nation, in the history of the English Literature and his singular way of changing a whole society, openning the doors to the beginning of a new era … I have decided to make reference in the tittle of my blog to Charles II of England, well- known by that time as “The Merrie Monarch” in reference, first of all, to the liveliness and hedonism of his court, and secondly because the general relief experienced by the society at the return to normality, after over a decade under the rules of Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans. To talk about Charles II is to talk about a period of splendor at the English Literature, of happiness in the English society and its writers. If we take a look at this period, in the 17th century, we will discover how many typical literary forms of the modern world, including the novel, biography, history, travel writing, and journalism gained confidence during the Restoration. Theatres reopened after having been closed during the protectorship of Oliver Cromwell, the "Restoration comedy" became a remarkable genre. Theatre licenses granted by Charles were the first in England to permit women to play female roles on stage (that were previously played by boys), and Restoration literature had the priviledge of having writers as John Dryden, John Locke etc. Hoping this blog will be a good place to share ideas, opinions about different subjects, today, I say good bye, but remember I am waiting for you..... come around and enjoy with me this marvelous world, that we all called: “Literature”
